Cornelius – The Lakeside of Charlotte
Cornelius, North Carolina is a lakeside town located along Lake Norman in northern Mecklenburg County. It is one of three towns in Mecklenburg County along with Davidson, and Huntersville that serve as a lakefront utopia year-round.
In 1963, Duke Power created Lake Norman and provided the area with recreational opportunities and a source of hydroelectric power. The formation of Lake Norman also provided the town of Cornelius with approximately 70 miles of prime lakeside property.
Located on the southeast side of Lake Norman, Cornelius has a beautiful, four-season climate that makes for perfect year-round living, with plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy including boating, hiking, fishing, tubing, and barbecuing.
The town was founded in 1893 and incorporated in March 1905. A successful cotton purchasing business inspired the owners to construct a cotton mill where raw cotton could be converted into cloth. Joseph Benjamin Cornelius (1833-1914) supplied the needed investment for the mill. was opened. The residents recognized his significant role and re-named the town Cornelius.
